A small reminder about Supplier Verification

Why transparency matters when evaluating new marine spare parts suppliers.

Supplier verification is an important part of maintaining trust in any trading network, particularly in the marine spare parts sector where buyers often deal with unfamiliar suppliers.

As PartfinderMarine continues to grow, we occasionally review how suppliers are presented on the platform and how buyers can assess credibility when making contact.

From time to time a new supplier appears on the radar claiming to hold significant stock and offering to quote for a wide range of marine spare parts. One such message landed in our inbox this week, after adding PartfinderMarine.com to their mailing list, — without the usual courtesy of asking first.

Their website suggested a well-established operation with thousands of parts ready to ship and many years of experience in the marine sector.

As most of you will appreciate, claims like that are not unusual in this industry. They are also very easy to verify.

A quick check of the local company business registry showed that the business had in fact been incorporated only recently ( two weeks ago). That does not make it illegitimate. Every company starts somewhere. It simply means that the trading history is short and the business is still establishing itself.

The next step was to confirm the registered address and operating location. The registered office turned out to be in one city, while the operational address provided was a completely different area. Again, not impossible, but something worth clarifying, especially given a quick internet search brought up a “ why are all these foreign businesses being registered in a remote and mostly disused industrial estate” set or articles.

We then asked the simplest question of all: whether the company held its own inventory or sourced parts through supplier networks. The answer was refreshingly honest. They confirmed that they do hold some stock, but that many of the parts they offer are sourced through suppliers.

That exchange is a useful reminder of something most experienced buyers already know. In today’s market many companies describe themselves as stockists, when in reality they are acting as sourcing brokers or intermediaries. There is nothing inherently wrong with that model, provided everyone understands what it is.

The lesson is simply that transparency matters.

When dealing with a new supplier it is always worth taking a moment to confirm the basics: the company registration, the trading history, the location of operations and whether the business is holding stock or sourcing it through partners.

These are not investigative steps. They are simply normal commercial due diligence and the graphic below shows why this is so necessary, but that is a topic for another day.

Platforms such as PartfinderMarine.com exist precisely because trust and transparency are essential in the marine spare parts business. The more clearly buyers and suppliers present themselves, the easier it is for everyone to do business with confidence. That’s why we check, that’s why we verify, and that’s why having a complete profile and company logo on your PartfinderMarine.com account makes a difference.

As always, if you have any questions about verifying suppliers or would like to discuss listing your own stock on the platform, feel free to get in touch.

If you have recently registered either as a “ Seller” or a “ Buyer” and your account has not yet been activated, don’t worry, we are still playing catch-up from the increased activity we have seen over the last few months.

If you have registered and haven’t heard from us, check to see if you have already verified your e-mail address – a simple step that can stall your registration completely, check to see if there are any messages from us in your spam or junk folders ( if so take them out and “ whitelist “ us. Please?
